Russians allegedly seized part of Sumy region: what is known
10 December 2024 16:35
DeepState analysts said that Russian troops occupied about 2 km² of Sumy region near the village of Oleksandriya and advanced into Kursk region of Russia. However, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine (SBGS) and the Sumy Regional Military Administration (RMA) deny that the enemy has made any advance. What is really happening on the northern border of Ukraine and Russia – we looked into "Komersant Ukrainian".
What is known
On the night of December 10, DeepState reported that the Russians had occupied 1.98 km² in the Sumy region. These changes are marked on their map.
Ukrayinska Pravda’s military sources claim that Russian troops crossed the Ukrainian border in the area of Myropillya almost a month ago.
The Russians took advantage of weaknesses in the defense
Military expert Oleg Zhdanov in an exclusive commentary to Kommersant Ukrainian
“The General Staff is actively refuting this information, even involving the border service. But if you look at the DeepState map, it becomes clear that the Russians used a militarily competent approach. They took advantage of the difficult swampy terrain and tried to cut off our logistics routes to supply the groups on the border.”
Oleh Zhdanov
The expert points out that the situation may pose a threat, and we need to localize this area as soon as possible.
“Ideally, we should deter the enemy or force him to retreat. However, the problem is much deeper: in two years, the border in Sumy region has not been fortified as a defensive line. This is a systemic mistake that allows the enemy to act actively,”
– states Oleh Zhdanov.

The expert also noted that in the area of Oleksandria, the Russians quickly took advantage of the situation:
“As soon as we retreated from certain positions, the enemy immediately intervened and began actions near important logistics routes. It seems that the General Staff will deny the scale of the problem to the last, but the reality will require the involvement of reserves to localize the situation.”
Oleg Zhdanov
The expert summarized that operational decisions are now key to stabilizing the situation in this area.
Defense Force officer explains why we should not be afraid of Russian “advance”
Defense Forces officer Yevhen “Tykhyi” in an exclusive commentary
“We should not react too emotionally to temporary events when the enemy has entered or passed somewhere. It looks like sporadic maneuvers. You should panic when serious advances or concentration of equipment begins. And such situations happen often – it was similar in the summer during the Kursk operation.”
– says Yevhen “Tykhyi”

“Tykhyi emphasized that the political map does not always accurately reflect the real situation on the ground.
“There are many abandoned villages on the contact line where the enemy can temporarily enter from time to time. But this does not change the operational and tactical situation in the region. A similar situation occurred in Chernihiv region, where Russians entered the border village of Muravy, hung up their rag, and it meant absolutely nothing,”
– summarized Yevhen “Tykhyi”
The Defense Forces officer urged not to exaggerate the significance of such actions of the enemy and to remain calm.
Official position
State Border Guard Service spokesman Andriy Demchenko said that the border guards did not record the arrival of Russian troops.
“The terrain in this area is swampy, which makes it difficult for the enemy to gain a foothold or develop offensive actions. Ukrainian forces are holding defense in favorable positions.”
Andriy Demchenko
Sumy JFO called the information about the enemy’s breakthrough a fake.
“The situation at the border is under control. We urge citizens to trust only official sources of information,”
– said Volodymyr Artyukh, head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration.
Ukrainian forces continue to monitor the situation and promise to promptly inform about any changes.
