Russians report the most massive Ukrainian drone attack since May

12 September 10:10

Russian sources report that on the night of September 12, Ukraine carried out a large-scale drone attack on the territory of the Russian Federation, which was the largest in the last three and a half months. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, a total of 221 Ukrainian drones were shot down and intercepted over various regions of the country, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

A blow to strategic infrastructure

The most significant was the damage to Russia’s largest oil port, Primorsk in the Leningrad region, through which about 58 million tons of oil and oil products are exported annually. More than 30 Ukrainian drones attacked the region, resulting in a fire:

  • one of the ships in the port caught fire;
  • one of the pumping stations caught fire;
  • the wreckage of downed drones fell in several settlements of the region.

The governor of the Leningrad region, Alexander Drozdenko, however, assured that “there is no threat of flooding and oil spills.”

In the Smolensk region, according to preliminary information, the targets were the facilities of the Lukoil oil company, where eyewitnesses recorded explosions and fires.

The scale of the attack

In total, the Ukrainian drone attack last night affected 12 Russian regions:

  • Bryansk Oblast – 85 drones (the most);
  • Smolensk region – 42 drones;
  • Leningrad region – 28 drones;
  • Kaluga region – 18 drones;
  • Novgorod region – 14 drones;
  • Moscow and Orel regions – 9 drones each.

Attacks were also recorded in the Belgorod, Rostov, Tver, Pskov, Tula, and Kursk regions.

Implications for civil aviation

The scale of the attack forced the Russian authorities to implement the “Cover” plan at Pulkovo Airport (St. Petersburg), which led to

  • delays of 28 flights;
  • cancellation of 13 flights;
  • redirecting 11 airplanes to alternate airfields.

The airports of Ivanovo, Pskov, Yaroslavl, and Kaluga were also temporarily closed.

This is the first attack of this magnitude since late May 2025, when Russian air defense claimed to have destroyed 296 drones in one night.

It is worth remembering that these are data from Russian official bodies, which may be distorted.
