Russian troops have launched a series of strikes on Sumy State University. The main building of the institution was damaged, and one of the buildings was destroyed, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

According to Suspilne, on the evening of August 17, the occupiers hit Sumy with a ballistic missile. The main building of the university was damaged. On the night of August 18, the enemy attacked with four more kamikaze drones, as a result of which one of the buildings of Sumy State University was destroyed.

Photos from the scene were published by Kordon.media, and a video of the aftermath was posted by the acting secretary of the city council, Artem Kobzar. According to him, a non-residential building was destroyed, and windows were smashed.

University employees are now saving equipment. The inside of the building is flooded with water.

“We are evacuating the Center for Collective Use of Scientific Equipment. Since 2018, it has been providing analytical and material science research. Expensive equipment was purchased with grant funds, such as scanning electron microscopes and microanalyzers,” said Anatoliy Chornous, Vice-Rector for Research.

This is not the first attack on the university. In September 2024, the Russians attacked the educational building of Sumy State University, and in April 2025, two ballistic missiles hit the city: 35 people were killed, and the university was among the damaged objects.

According to the military, in just one day, from August 17 to 18, the Russian army fired more than 90 times at 37 settlements in Sumy region, and there were wounded.
