US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will assume a key administrative role in the United States’ governance of Venezuela after the overthrow of the country’s ruler, Nicolas Maduro.

This was reported by Bloomberg on Sunday, January 4, citing an unnamed American official. The US Secretary of State himself is an American of Cuban descent, born in Miami to Cuban immigrants, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

According to Bloomberg, US President Donald Trump said that he pays great attention to Venezuela’s oil industry, and US oil companies will “spend billions of dollars” to rebuild the country’s oil infrastructure. Trump’s team of Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Homeland Security Advisor Stephen Miller, and Defense Secretary Pete Hagel is currently working on a governance structure for Venezuela, an unnamed official told The Wall Street Journal.

US Strikes on Caracas and Maduro’s Capture

On the night of January 3, 2026, the US army struck the Venezuelan capital, Caracas. U.S. President Donald Trump said that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Silia Flores, were captured by a Delta Force unit and taken out of the country, first to the U.S. Navy base in Guantanamo Bay, and later to New York.
