The US side did not expect to reach an agreement on the Ukrainian issue at the meeting between US and Russian Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska, as the talks did not involve representatives of Kyiv.
This was stated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in an interview with ABC TV channel, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
“We never said that an agreement would be reached as a result of the meeting, because there were no Ukrainians there,” Rubio said.
on August 15, Putin and Trump held talks in Alaska. The politicians talked for almost three hours. One of the main topics of the talks was ending the war in Ukraine. According to the American leader, no peaceful settlement was reached during the talks, but there are significant chances of reaching a settlement in the future.
on August 18, Trump’s special envoy Steven Whitkoff said that the United States and Russia had agreed on robust security guarantees for Ukraine, which he said were “a watershed.” Whitkoff also noted that the Russian side had made concessions in five regions of Ukraine and agreed “not to take over the whole of Ukraine.”
