Rubio: The United States is close to ending Russia’s war against Ukraine

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that they are closer than ever to ending the war in Ukraine. This is reported by Sky News, "Komersant Ukrainian" informs
According to him, a potential meeting between President Donald Trump and Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin will depend on further progress towards peace.
“Today was a good day, but there is still a lot of work to be done. I don’t want to exaggerate, but we’re definitely closer to peace today than we were yesterday, when we weren’t close at all,” Rubio said.
Trump – Putin: a meeting is possible, but not guaranteed
According to Rubio, the recent meeting between US Special Representative Steve Witkoff and Vladimir Putin was productive. However, this is not enough – further progress is needed.
“We will also be holding talks with our European allies and the Ukrainians over the next few days to see what progress we can make on that side. And then, hopefully, if things continue to move forward, there will be an opportunity for the president to meet with both Putin and Zelenskiy at some point, hopefully in the not-too-distant future,” the secretary of state said.
At the same time, Rubio said, a phone call between Trump and Putin is not currently scheduled, but such a possibility is not ruled out in the coming days.
As Rubio added, “a lot has to happen” before a meeting between the presidents can take place. However, in his opinion, it is necessary for the head of the White House to “come and make a deal to end the war.”
And when asked about secondary sanctions against Russia, he said that Trump would make a decision within the next 24 to 36 hours.
As for the war itself, he said they now “better understand” the conditions under which Russia will end the war.
Earlier, Donald Trump announced plans to meet with Vladimir Putin, and later to hold a trilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. However, there has been no official confirmation from the Kremlin or Kyiv.
