Boxwood, books, and caramel: a perfume with the university’s scent was created in Chernivtsi

To mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of Chernivtsi National University (CNU), a group of students under the guidance of Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Associate Professor Yuriy Halavko are creating a perfume with the “smell” of the university. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the regional media outlet C4.

At the beginning of the work, the enthusiasts asked university students what they associate with the university. The young people spoke about the smell of old books, greenery, mowed grass, and the atmosphere of old Austrian architecture. The students used all these associations in their work on the fragrance.

Kateryna Rybak, who is studying at the ChNU in the master’s program, played a leading role in the creative process.

“After classes or on weekends, I would come and make perfume, make samples, and hand them over to Yuriy Bohdanovych. We waited for a long time for maceration, then compared with other people at the association whether they liked it or not, about their associations with the university,” Rybak said.

In turn, Yuriy Halavka noted that the fragrance will be released in two versions. For men, a perfume with green notes will be presented, because the ChNU is associated with boxwood. And the “female” version will be dominated by caramel-pink scents.

The perfumes are scheduled to be released in September 2025. They will become original souvenirs of the university, and later they may appear on sale.

It is worth noting that Yurii Halavka, an associate professor at the University, became interested in creating perfumes in early 2024. For this purpose, the scientist even attended special courses.

Since we have some methods at our department that are now used to create perfumes, it became interesting to understand the quality of the components. Then I wanted to learn more. I signed up for professional online courses. I bought some ingredients for myself and the department. Then I came up with the idea to use artificial intelligence to write recipes for new fragrances,” Halavka explained.

“The perfume teacher already has more than 100 components in his assortment, with the help of which he creates new fragrances. He buys the ingredients from domestic producers. Last year, he paid from 50 to 250 hryvnias for 5 ml of a component.

The scientist uses his hobby to teach students and also makes exclusive gifts – perfumes – for colleagues, family and friends. Yurii Halavka has no plans to turn his fragrance creation into a business.
