Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy is to begin serving his prison term on October 21, 2025. This was reported by the AFP agency, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
According to the agency, the politician has appealed the court’s verdict, but this does not stop the execution of the decision to imprison him. According to the ruling, Sarkozy must serve his sentence in deferred detention with a suspended sentence.
Earlier, the Paris Criminal Court found Sarkozy guilty of criminal conspiracy to illegally finance the presidential campaign with funds provided by Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.
The court ruled that the sentence be immediately executed, despite the appeal filed by the former president’s lawyers. Once they are placed in custody, they will be able to apply to the Paris Court of Appeal for release.

Conditions of detention
For security reasons, Sarkozy may be placed in a block for vulnerable prisoners or in a separate cell. The politician himself noted that he accepts the court’s decision.
Sarkozy said that the court “ordered the detention so that I could be in prison as soon as possible.”
“I will take responsibility, I will comply with the court’s demands,” he said. – “If they really want me to go to prison, I will do it, but with my head held high.
According to French journalists, Sarkozy will not escape prison. An appeal hearing is scheduled for March 2026, and the former president will remain in custody until then.
This verdict is already being called “historic” in France, as Sarkozy became the first president of the Republic and even the first EU head of state to be imprisoned.
What is known about the prison where Sarkozy will be held
La Santé prison is located in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, in the south of the city. It is currently the only operating prison in the French capital.
It was built in 1867. It housed prisoners sentenced to hard labor or the death penalty. Death sentences were carried out here: a guillotine was moved to the square in front of the prison on special rails.
During the occupation of France by the Germans during World War II, political prisoners and members of the Resistance were held in the prison.
French journalists say that Sarkozy will be comfortable in La Sante. The prison was renovated only five years ago. And the conditions of detention are quite acceptable: prisoners are offered separate cells of 10-12 square meters, equipped with showers.
