Microsoft has made yet another large-scale staff reduction, laying off hundreds of employees just weeks after the largest layoffs in recent years. This decision underscores the tech industry’s efforts to reduce personnel costs at a time when companies are investing billions of dollars in the development of artificial intelligence. Bloomberg writes about it, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

According to a Washington state document reviewed by the agency, more than 300 Microsoft employees received notices of their positions being eliminated on Monday.

A company spokesperson confirmed that the latest staff cuts are in addition to the 6,000 layoffs announced last month.

“We continue to implement the organizational changes necessary to best position the company for success in a dynamic marketplace,”

– said a spokesman for the corporation.

Artificial intelligence is taking away jobs

The artificial intelligence boom has had a significant impact on the tech labor market, as companies prioritize AI-related positions and use the technology to save money.

Microsoft, along with competitors including Meta Platforms Inc. are actively promoting the effectiveness of AI-enabled coding tools that speed up the software development process. Last week, Salesforce Inc. reported that the internal use of artificial intelligence allowed it to hire fewer employees.

The previous layoffs at Microsoft mostly affected software engineers. It has not yet been determined which positions were cut on Monday.

As of June 2024, the company employed about 228,000 full-time employees, 55% of whom were employed in the United States.

Artificial intelligence: background

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science that deals with the creation of systems capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. This includes functions such as image, speech, and text recognition, decision making, language translation, and information generalization. Modern AI systems are based mainly on machine learning methods, especially deep learning using neural networks that are trained on large data sets.

In recent years, artificial intelligence has become an integral part of many areas of life, from personal assistants in smartphones to medical data analysis systems and autopilots in transportation. AI is divided into “narrow” (or specialized) AI, which is created to solve specific tasks, and “general” AI, a theoretical concept of a system that could perform any human-level intellectual tasks. Currently, all existing AI systems belong to the category of narrow artificial intelligence.

The development of artificial intelligence poses both enormous opportunities and serious challenges for humanity. On the one hand, AI can help solve complex problems in medicine, science, ecology, and other industries. On the other hand, there are ethical, security, and socioeconomic issues related to labor automation and the possible use of AI for harmful purposes. Therefore, the development of artificial intelligence is accompanied by efforts to create appropriate regulatory frameworks and ethical principles.
