Switzerland has not yet returned Yanukovych’s millions: what will happen to the assets

Switzerland has not yet unblocked the assets it froze after President Viktor Yanukovych and his closest associates fled Ukraine in 2014. This is confirmed by official Bernese authorities and local judicial sources as of June 2025, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
The decision to unblock the assets has not yet been made. All of them remain under temporary restrictions and are in the process of administrative confiscation.
Switzerland froze these assets immediately after the Revolution of Dignity at the request of official Kyiv and with the help of international legal mechanisms of cooperation. At that time, the total amount of blocked assets reached 70 million Swiss francs (about 69 million US dollars).
Subsequently, an administrative procedure was initiated to confiscate additional assets worth CHF 130 million (approximately USD 140.6 million).
The procedure is intended to verify the legality of the origin of these funds and to determine whether they were accumulated “thanks to” corruption and abuse of power during the rule of Viktor Yanukovych. The decision on confiscation has not yet been made: the case is being considered by administrative and judicial authorities in Switzerland.
The Swiss authorities are cooperating with Ukrainian law enforcement agencies in this case. The investigation is thoroughly checking all financial flows to determine whether they are legally acquired or, on the contrary, originate from corruption or other criminal activities.
Switzerland looks forward to working with official Kyiv to ensure the transparency and legitimacy of the entire procedure. Official statements by the Bernese authorities emphasize that the responsible persons are ready to provide all legal mechanisms for transferring these assets to Ukrainian accounts.
Thus, the assets of Yanukovych’s entourage remain frozen in Swiss bank accounts for the time being.
It should be noted that in February 2025, the High Anti-Corruption Court seized the assets of Vyacheslav Zanevsky, a former bodyguard of Viktor Yanukovych, to the state . The court upheld the claim of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine against Viacheslav Zanevskyi to impose a sanction under paragraph 1-1 of part one of Article 4 of the Law of Ukraine “On Sanctions”.
The following assets of Zanevsky were transferred to the state revenue:
- 100% of the authorized capital of AMSTEL-SKI LLC;
- 5 objects of intellectual property rights;
- 12 land plots;
- 2 apartments;
- 4 parking spaces;
- a vehicle;
- 10 weapons;
- cash equivalent to more than UAH 300,000.
