“Sit down. “I have no arm”: host Kostyantyn Hrubych tells about the feat of his son who lost a limb

Ukrainian TV presenter Kostyantyn Grubych recalled one of the most difficult moments in his life – the day he learned about the serious injury of his son Yaroslav, who serves in the Ukrainian Armed Forces. the 28-year-old soldier lost his arm, but even then, a few hours after the injury, he called his family to reassure them. Konstantin Grubich told about this in an interview with "Komersant Ukrainian".
According to Grubych, it was his son’s calmness and courage that helped the family not to break down at that terrible moment.
“He called a few hours later and said: “Sit down. There was an ‘arrival’ and I have no arm.” That’s what I remember. That was the number two hole in my life that started. How many deaths are there? There are two centimeters where the arm is and where the head is, and if something went wrong, it would have been like with ‘Spectrum’ (the call sign of Yaroslav Hrubych’s brother-in-arms who died at the front – ed.) But he reassured us,” the TV host said.
Hrubych admitted that he no longer remembers how he responded to his son, but he immediately called his work, warned that he would not be able to go on the air, and began looking for doctors’ contacts and tried to contact the war trauma center that specializes in prosthetics, Superhumans.
“Then I told Yaroslav that we were coming to you. He replies: “No amateurishness. I’m going to be evacuated from here, so I won’t be here tomorrow. No need to come.” And in the morning I called the doctor, who said that they would not evacuate him anywhere, because he was very heavy. He needed to stay here for a few days. So we went there,” the journalist said.
Kostyantyn Grubych says he still cannot understand how his son managed to remain so balanced and collected after such a serious injury.
“I still can’t understand how he held on. This is the greatest feat. Whether it was mental or something else. It’s a miracle. The way he held on is a miracle. He saved me and my mom, and my sister from an even greater apocalypse,” the host added.
Yaroslav Hrubych’s injury
In July of this year, Yaroslav reported that he had “experienced something terrible.” He posted a photo from his hospital room, which showed that he had lost his right arm. The soldier did not disclose the details of the incident, but demonstrated incredible resilience.
“I recently celebrated my second birthday. I survived. You learn to use your left hand quickly if you want to, but they are already promising, as they say, a “new sexy pen”. Or maybe I heard badly, because I lost my hearing for a while, you know. In addition, I had to undergo resuscitation, injections, and anesthesia. Yes, dear friends, I went through something terrible this week, but we must not give up. Hang in there and we will not be defeated. I thank my family and friends for their words of support,” the soldier wrote.
