State Tax Service scandal: employees suspected of leaking data to DarkNet

A group of people who illegally sold confidential data from the databases of the State Tax Service of Ukraine (STSU) has been exposed in Kyiv. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office.
According to them, the suspects include two current tax officials. They are charged with illegal access to information systems and disclosure of restricted information (Part 3 of Article 362 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
The investigation revealed that the defendants in the case acted in concert. Two employees of the State Tax Service, aged 24 and 25, having access to the closed official database of the State Tax Service, which contains confidential information about Ukrainian citizens, unauthorizedly collected information about individuals and legal entities, copied it and sent it to their 30-year-old unemployed friend, a resident of Chernivtsi region, who sold it to “clients” for $100-300.
he was looking for “clients” in a closed Russian hacker forum on DarkNet. He passed the “orders” he received to his accomplices, who searched for the necessary information. The “seller” accepted payment only to a crypto wallet, and the funds received were distributed among all participants in the transaction.
At least three episodes of illegal access to tax databases and data transfer to third parties were recorded.
The management of the State Tax Service assisted the investigation. The suspects were detained and face up to six years in prison and a ban on holding public office for three years. According to the prosecutor’s office, law enforcement officers already have solid evidence, and investigative actions are ongoing.
The State Tax Service promised to review internal security protocols and strengthen the protection of information systems to prevent similar cases in the future. Representatives of the Security Service of Ukraine and cyber police are also involved in the investigation, in particular, tracking the ways in which information was disseminated on forums and identifying the customers.
