Former U.S. President Donald Trump has reiterated his support for Russia’s return to the Group of Seven (G7), calling its exclusion a “mistake.” This is reported by the Reuters news agency, "Komersant Ukrainian" informs

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump emphasized that he did not agree with the decision to expel Russia after the annexation of Crimea in 2014.

“I would like to bring them back. I think it was a mistake to throw them out. Look, it’s not about whether you like Russia or not. It was the G8,” he said.

He also added that Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin, in his opinion, is also interested in returning to the G7 format.

“I think Putin would like to come back,” Trump added.

How did other countries react?

Canada, which holds the G7 presidency this year, has not yet commented on Trump’s statement.

Previously, most members of the club were categorically against Russia’s return without fulfilling its international obligations, particularly with regard to Ukraine.

What is the G7?

“The Group of Seven is an informal international organization that includes the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Canada, France, and Japan.

Until 2014, this club also included Russia, which expanded the format to G8. However, after the illegal annexation of Crimea, Moscow was expelled, and the countries of the association continued to work without it.
