Criticism of India’s trade with Russia

Trump has expressed strong dissatisfaction with India’s trade relations with Russia, saying:

“I don’t care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies together, I don’t care.”

The US president also emphasized the problems in US trade with India. He called Indian tariffs “too high, some of the highest in the world” and stated that the United States does “very little business with India.”

Regarding Russian-American trade relations, Trump said:

“Russia and the United States do almost no business together. Let’s keep it that way.”

Context of the events

Earlier, Trump announced a 25% tariff on Indian goods starting August 1, as well as a “penalty” for what he considers unfair trade policies and for India’s purchases of military equipment and energy from Russia.

The announcement is part of the growing trade tensions between the US and India as the Russian-Ukrainian war continues and the US attempts to isolate the Russian economy.

Overall, this announcement was one of Trump’s most harsh diplomatic statements against Russia and its allies since the beginning of his second presidential term.
