“The investigation loves silence”: Bronevytskyi on the Midas case, Alibaba and NABU

Stanislav Bronevytsky, a lawyer and former prosecutor of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, said that Ukrainian anti-corruption authorities are increasingly politicizing criminal investigations, and loud media campaigns instead of “procedural silence” threaten the inevitability of punishment. He said this on the air of the YouTube channel "Komersant Ukrainian"
According to him, the investigation in complex criminal proceedings requires silence, not publicity. He cited the Midas case as an example.
“The investigation loves silence. Let’s take the example of the criminal proceedings in the Midas case: was it possible to achieve a procedural result with complete media silence? People would have gone out to conduct searches, detained those whom they deemed necessary to detain, brought them to court, imposed preventive measures – the result would have been the same,” he said.
Instead, according to Bronevytsky, law enforcement agencies deliberately chose a different tactic – the media. That is why, in his opinion, the story of the searches of the former head of the Presidential Office, Andriy Yermak, has only political consequences.
“Yermak’s resignation is a political responsibility, there is no notice of suspicion. The heads of anti-corruption agencies officially report that a person commits crimes because there is an influence on law enforcement for one purpose or another – this is a criminal offense. So I have a question – where is the suspicion against Yermak? Why is it still missing?” he said.
Bronevytskyi also emphasized that investigators, prosecutors and judges should not be political players, as this destroys the very idea of justice.
“None of the representatives of law enforcement agencies, neither the prosecutor’s office nor the court, are and should never be politicians when they investigate cases,” he said.
