German holding company Axel Springer has acquired The Telegraph newspaper

On Friday, March 6, German media holding Axel Springer announced that it had agreed to purchase the British newspaper The Telegraph for £575 million (approximately €662 million). The deal was concluded with the current owner of the publication, the RedBird IMI consortium, a joint venture between the American investment company Redbird and the Abu Dhabi Media Investment Fund (IMI).

This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to DW.

Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner announced plans to bring the 170-year-old British newspaper to the US market and make it “the most widely read and intellectually inspiring center-right media outlet in the English-speaking world.” It is expected that the experience of Politico and Business Insider, which already belong to the Axel Springer holding, along with the popular German newspapers Bild and Die Welt, will help achieve this goal.

“More than 20 years ago, we already tried to buy The Telegraph, but we didn’t succeed then. Now our dream has come true,” said Döpfner.

The Telegraph was previously sought after by the owners of the Daily Mail

In November 2025, the owner of the Daily Mail tabloid, DMGT, agreed with Redbird IMI to buy The Telegraph for £500 million (approximately €577 million), but the Labour government initiated regulatory checks. The deal with Axel Springer must also be approved by the British regulator – UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy has announced her intention to review it.
