Ukrposhta Has Shed Its Soviet “Legacy”: How Much Is Expected From the Sale

Ukrposhta expects to raise over 22 million hryvnia from the sale of more than 1,000 old cars, which will go toward upgrading its vehicle fleet. Ukrposhta Chairman Ihor Smiliansky announced this on Telegram, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

“Ukrposhta’s junk cars and Soviet past—that’s all over now. I’ll miss the millions of views on TikTok videos about the sale of our cars, as well as the experts’ posts about who I should give what to and when—for free—but this chapter is now closing. The last two days have been tough for automotive news—we’ve lost three cars. But today, let’s focus on the positive,” Smiliansky emphasized.

He also noted:

“We expect to raise over 22 million UAH from the sale of more than 1,000 old Ukrposhta cars (some older than me) through the Prozorro.Sales platform. Why ‘expect’? Because the process of settling payments and transferring the cars to their new owners is still ongoing.”

Smiliansky said that over 600 participants took part in the auction.

“Buyers included collectors, volunteers supporting the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and repair shops looking for spare parts. The record-breaker was an old Toyota Land Cruiser, which drew bids from about 100 people, and the final price exceeded the starting bid by 23 times… We will, of course, use the proceeds to renew our vehicle fleet. P.S. The final auction is still ongoing in Dnipro and Zaporizhzhia, where some transactions did not take place due to the complex security situation,” he emphasized.

In total, “Ukrposhta” has liquidated the museum of the Soviet automotive industry. Among the lots sold were “Volga,” “Zhiguli,” “Gazelle,” “UAZ,” and the legendary “bukhanka” trucks, some of which predated Ukraine’s independence, according to the postal operator. Some of the trucks had covered more than a million kilometers during their service life.

Volkswagen, Suzuki, and other passenger cars—which were used as executive vehicles just ten years ago—will also find new owners.

The most expensive lot in the second phase was a Kyiv lot consisting of 23 Soviet-era cars, which sold for 916 thousand UAH. The cheapest was a Mazda 6 for 44 thousand UAH.

“Since the law does not allow the national operator to transfer decommissioned vehicles free of charge, open auctions have become the only legal mechanism for their sale. At the same time, a significant portion of the vehicles will be given a second life as sources of spare parts, particularly for volunteer and military needs,” the statement said.

The sale of old vehicles is part of the company’s large-scale modernization effort. Ukrposhta has completed 100% automation of its sorting processes and expanded its fleet with 160 new MAN and IVECO trucks.

In December 2025, Ukrposhta listed 716 vehicles for sale on ProZorro.Sales.

In the fourth quarter of 2025, Ukrposhta reported a net profit of 257.9 million UAH, which was 69.2% higher than the figure for the same period in 2024, thanks to additional revenue from the sale of company assets, which amounted to 168 млн грн.

In May 2026, Ukrposhta listed the last large batch of vehicles from its obsolete fleet on ProZorro.Sales online auctions.
