The apple harvest in Ukraine may exceed last year’s figures: how this will affect prices

Despite spring frosts and pollination issues, there is no reason to expect a significant drop in the apple harvest in Ukraine. On the contrary, the new season may yield a higher gross harvest than last year. This opinion was expressed in an article in the magazine “Gardening the Ukrainian Way” by Volodymyr Gurzhiy, head of the fruit export company USPA Fruit, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to AgroTimes.

“As of now, I view the new season as entirely positive. It currently looks like the harvest will be good. It should be larger than last year’s,” he noted.

According to the expert, despite localized losses from frost and rainy weather during flowering, the overall situation in the orchards is currently better than in the previous season. At the same time, he cautions against overly pessimistic assessments, which often appear on the market even before the harvest begins.

Gurzhiy also predicted that a larger harvest could put further pressure on prices. In his view, the Ukrainian market does not yet have sufficient tools to remove excess apple volumes from the fresh market.

Furthermore, the situation differs from last year in the processing segment as well. While high prices for apple concentrate previously supported demand for industrial apples, processing plants are currently operating with substantial product inventories.

If current forecasts hold true, Ukrainian consumers may be able to purchase more apples at lower prices than last year, while producers’ profitability will increasingly depend on the efficiency of production and sales.
