Snow, ice and Arctic frost: what kind of weather Kyiv residents can expect in the coming days

Kyiv and the region will soon face a challenging and dynamic period of weather conditions. According to Natalia Golenya, a weather forecaster, in an exclusive commentary to "Komersant Ukrainian", this week winter will remind us of itself with snowfall, ice and a significant cold snap.
In the next day, snow and sleet are expected in Kyiv and the region. The air temperature will fluctuate near zero, from 0 to 2 degrees below zero. As a result, some of the precipitation in the capital may fall as rain, creating additional risks for traffic and pedestrians.
“There will be more snow this week. In fact, tomorrow we will also have snow, sleet in Kyiv and the region. The weather conditions are expected to worsen on January 8-9, as the cyclone moves out of the Southwest and passes through. Therefore, there will be snow, sleet, and rain in the Kyiv region, including Kyiv, and in the south and east of the region, so there will be more slush build-up and ice on the roads,” said Natalia Golenya.
According to the forecaster, a significant increase in snow cover is possible in the west and north of Kyiv region – from 10 to 20 centimeters. For Kyiv, the situation remains somewhat uncertain, as the temperature background may cause snow to turn into rain.
“Kyiv is still in question until tomorrow, as there may be some rainfall. And the temperature, that is, is around zero, from zero to 2 degrees below zero. That is, if we are talking about these three days,” emphasized Natalia Golenya.
According to her, after the cyclone passes, the weather situation will change dramatically. Cold Arctic air will start coming in from the north. As early as January 9, the temperature will drop to 4-9 degrees below zero, and at night on January 10-11, the frost will increase to 15-20 degrees in the region. In Kyiv itself, temperatures are expected to reach 17-19 degrees below zero at night and 12-14 degrees during the day.
“This cyclone is passing, and very cold Arctic air is coming in from the north, and on January 9 we will have a significant drop to, say, 4-9 degrees below zero, and on January 10-11, the night temperature will further drop to 15-20 degrees in the Kyiv region. In Kyiv itself, we are expecting 17-19 degrees. For January 10-11.
That is when the precipitation will stop. If there are clearings, the temperature will be 15-20 degrees at night and 9-14 degrees below zero during the day. This is if we take the region. In Kyiv in particular, it will be 17-19 at night and 12-14 degrees below zero during the day,” the forecaster predicts.
The cold weather will continue at the beginning of next week – mostly without precipitation, with slight temperature fluctuations, but with a stable winter character.
