Biennial report: the UN names the number of civilian casualties of the war in Ukraine

“Millions of people across the country have lost their homes, been forced to flee or otherwise suffered severe hardship due to lack of access to basic services as a result of the war. The hostilities have damaged and destroyed hundreds of medical and educational facilities, significantly affecting children’s access to education and healthcare, as well as critical infrastructure. Entire towns have been destroyed,”

Since 24 February 2022, at least 10582 civilians have been killed and 19875 injured as a result of conflict-related violence in Ukraine (total civilian casualties – 30457).

The civilian casualty figures were particularly high in the first few months after the armed conflict, with thousands of civilians killed and injured every month. Although these numbers gradually decreased during 2022-2023, they remained high, with an average of 163 civilians killed and 547 injured per month in 2023.

This number includes 587 killed and 1298 injured children (for a total of 1,885 child casualties).

Among adults, men were disproportionately affected, accounting for 60 per cent of the above casualties.

In terms of the cause of death or injury, the vast majority of civilian casualties (91 per cent) were caused by explosive weapons with a wide area of impact. Mines and explosive remnants of war (ERW) accounted for 3.7 per cent, with other types of weapons and incidents causing the remaining casualties.
