The Kyiv Court of Appeal has upheld the custodial order for fugitive oligarch Gennadiy Boholyubov. This is stated in the court’s ruling, which is available to "Komersant Ukrainian"
The ruling was issued on April 29 at the request of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
Thus, the court dismissed the defense’s appeal and confirmed the legality of the arrest warrant issued earlier.
Boholyubov is suspected of involvement in a number of economic crimes, including those related to the withdrawal of funds from PrivatBank before its nationalization.
According to the investigation, the suspect is currently hiding outside Ukraine.
It should be noted that Gennadiy Boholyubov, who, according to the SBI, illegally crossed the state border, is being prepared to be extradited to Ukraine. Earlier, he was put on the international wanted list by the investigator .
Bogolyubov’s escape
Earlier, the Pecherskyi District Court of Kyiv ruled to arrest Hennadii Boholiubov, who left Ukraine in the summer of 2024 using forged documents.
According to the State Bureau of Investigation, Bogolyubov illegally left the territory of Ukraine accompanied by his close relative on June 24, 2024, while traveling on the Kyiv-Helm train. According to his documents, the oligarch did not cross the border of Ukraine. He traveled with an invalid passport of a citizen of Ukraine who is physically in Ukraine and has not left the country.
“At the same time, the oligarch presented his personal passport of a citizen of Ukraine to the Polish border guards for traveling abroad,”
– the SBI clarified.
According toUkrayinska Pravda, Boholyubov left Ukraine using the passport of a resident of Volyn Oblast, 67-year-old Syumak Mykola Kupriyanovych, who lost his passport in the spring of 2022.
The PrivatBank case
The HACCU ruling earlier revealed that PrivatBank’s money was laundered, among other things, through the Jewish Community of Ukraine.
The community was founded in 1999 but became active after the election of Ihor Kolomoisky as president. The founders and members of the community are Jewish public organizations and associations. The head office is located in the Menorah Jewish Community Center in Dnipro.
Hennadii Boholiubov is a representative of the leadership of the Jewish community of Ukraine and heads the Jewish community of Dnipro as president.
According to the investigation, the former owners of the so-called Privat Group withdrew a total of more than UAH 5.8 billion from PrivatBank. In this case, Ihor Kolomoisky has the status of a suspect and is in a pre-trial detention center. At the same time, some media outlets linked Bogolyubov’s sudden escape from Ukraine to the alleged intentions of law enforcement agencies to serve him with a notice of suspicion in the PrivatBank case.
Who is Gennadiy Bogolyubov?
Gennadiy Boholyubov is a well-known Ukrainian businessman and entrepreneur, born on January 20, 1962 in Dniprodzerzhynsk (now Kamianske). He is one of the founders and former co-owners of PrivatBank, Ukraine’s largest commercial bank, and the entire Privat Group. Bogolyubov was also a partner of Ihor Kolomoisky in many business projects.
Mr. Bogolyubov graduated from the Dnipro Civil Engineering Institute. His business career began in the 1990s when he and his partners founded PrivatBank. He subsequently became one of the key players in Ukrainian business, with interests in various industries, including banking, metallurgy, oil and gas, and real estate.
Together with Kolomoisky, Boholyubov controlled the Privat Group, which had significant assets in Ukraine and abroad. However, in 2016, PrivatBank was nationalized by the Ukrainian government due to problems with its capitalization and loan portfolio structure.
As of 2024, Gennadiy Boholyubov was still involved in the business, although his influence on the Ukrainian economy had significantly decreased compared to the period before PrivatBank’s nationalization.
Boholyubov is known for his charitable activities, including support for the Jewish community.
In March 2024, the media reported that Boholyubov became the father of a daughter born to Emine Dzhaparova, First Deputy Foreign Minister and Permanent Representative of Ukraine to International Organizations in Vienna. This is Bogolyubov’s sixth child. After Boholyubov’s escape, Dzhaparova resigned from her post at the Foreign Ministry.
