Case on embezzlement of UAH 251 million in bulletproof vests procurement sent to court

The NABU and the SAPO have sent to court a case regarding the embezzlement of public funds allocated for the purchase of personal protective equipment for the military. This was reported by the NABU press service, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

According to the investigation, in May-June 2022, the CEO of Ukrpatent, in collusion with the acting Secretary of State of the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine and the chief accountant of the state enterprise, contrary to the law, ensured the transfer of almost UAH 251 million to a charity for allegedly bulletproof vests for the Armed Forces.

Subsequently, a number of transactions were carried out with these funds and cashed out for the purpose of misappropriation. Not a single bulletproof vest was ever delivered to the military.

The Director General of Ukrpatent is charged with Part 5 of Article 191 of the Criminal Code (misappropriation or embezzlement of property in a particularly large scale); the chief accountant of the state enterprise and the former acting state Secretary of the Ministry of Economy – part 5 of Article 27 (complicity in an offence) and part 5 of Article 191 of the Criminal Code; the chairman of the board of a charity organisation – part 5 of Article 27, part 5 of Article 191, part 3 of Article 209 of the Criminal Code (legalisation (laundering) of the proceeds of crime).

Earlier, prosecutors submitted to the court an indictment against former officials of the Ministry of Defence who purchased low-quality ammunition for the military worth UAH 1.4 billion.
