Attempt to oust Budanov in June fails – The Economist

June was marked by several important political events, among which the unsuccessful attempt to dismiss the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, Kyrylo Budanov, deserves special attention.
This was reported by The Economist, citing its own sources, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
According to journalists, the possibility of rotations in key positions in the security sector has long been discussed in government circles. The matter allegedly came to a serious initiative to dismiss Budanov, who, according to the publication’s interlocutors, causes a mixed reaction in the presidential environment, ranging from admiration for his determination to concern about his independence.
Nevertheless, the June attempt to remove him failed again. The Economist notes that the reason for this may have been the support of Ukraine’s international partners, particularly the United States. Sources suggest that a warning from the White House could have been the factor that kept the situation from changing radically.
At the same time, the article notes that the head of the Presidential Office, Andriy Yermak, has a significant influence on personnel policy in the highest echelons of power. It is his administration that is associated with attempts to reformat the government and security structures, although these processes have not yet been completed.
