The Israeli armed forces have launched a ground operation in Gaza City aimed at the complete seizure of the territory and the destruction of the radical Islamist group Hamas, which is accused of terrorist acts against Israeli citizens. This was reported by Axios, citing sources in the Israeli government, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
Before the start of the operation, the Israeli army called on about a million residents of Gaza City to evacuate to the south to specially created “humanitarian zones.” According to the IDF, approximately 300,000 people have already left the city.
On Monday evening, the Israeli air force carried out large-scale air strikes on Gaza, after which tank units entered the city, Palestinian media reported.
The operation began shortly after talks between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. According to Axios, Rubio expressed support for the Trump administration’s offensive, but emphasized the need for its rapid completion.
Representatives of the US side also noted that the Trump administration does not intend to restrain Israel and allows it to determine its own strategy for the war in Gaza.

A war of destruction?
This offensive is another escalation of the conflict between Israel and Hamas, which has been going on for almost two years. The operation may lead to an increase in the number of victims and a deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.
According to the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health in Gaza, about 65,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed since the start of hostilities after the group’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, but this figure may be an underestimate.
Israel’s actions have also caused a massive famine in Gaza, which, according to UN estimates, will turn into a famine by the end of September.
