The United States, Russia and Germany have started a new conflict over the energy future of Europe

Germany is actively looking for ways to prevent any agreements between the United States and Russia aimed at reviving the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Bild.
As BILD and the Financial Times have found out, secret talks have been going on between representatives of Russia and the United States for several weeks now about the purchase of the damaged gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea by American investors.
According to German government circles, rumors of a deal between Trump and Putin to supply gas to Europe have been circulating for a long time. They say it is a “realistic scenario.” Currently, the levers at Germany’s disposal to prevent the return of Nord Stream 2 are being intensively studied.
In addition, several independent sources have confirmed to BILD in recent weeks that former US Ambassador to Berlin Richard Grenell has been involved in secret negotiations.
Agreements between Moscow and Washington: What is the German government’s reaction?
National media report that the German government has already emphasized that it is not negotiating the resuscitation of Nord Stream 2. This position is in line with Germany’s strategic goal of becoming independent of Russian gas, which is considered critical to national security. German authorities emphasize that the pipeline is not certified and therefore cannot be used.
“Resuscitation” of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline: what is known about it
In early March 2025, there were reports that individuals closely associated with Russian President Vladimir Putin and the administration of US President Donald Trump were conducting secret negotiations to resume Nord Stream 2. In particular, Matthias Warnig, a former East German Stasi officer and ex-director of the parent company of Nord Stream 2, is in favor of attracting American investors to revive the project. This plan indicates a possible “warming” in relations between the US and Russia.
Reaction in Europe
The prospect of Nord Stream 2 resumption has caused concern among European leaders. Estonia, a member of NATO and the EU, explicitly condemned any attempts to revive the pipeline and emphasized that Europe should reduce its dependence on Russian energy. The potential participation of US investors in the project has also raised concerns about the possible US influence on European energy supplies.
Economic impact
According to experts, the uncertainty surrounding Nord Stream 2 has had a significant impact on energy markets. After the controversial meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which raised doubts about a possible peace deal and further increase in Russian gas supplies, European natural gas prices rose significantly. This volatility underscores the sensitivity of energy markets to geopolitical events and the critical importance of a stable energy policy.
What is Nord Stream 2?
The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which was completed in September 2021, was supposed to double the capacity of the existing Nord Stream route and allow Russia to export up to 110 billion cubic meters of natural gas directly to Germany each year. However, its operation was suspended in February 2022, when Germany suspended its certification in response to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian armed forces. In September 2022, parts of the pipeline were damaged by explosions, rendering it unusable.
