US lifts sanctions against companies that helped arm Russia

19 December 10:45

The U.S. Treasury Department has removed from the sanctions list several foreign companies and individuals who were previously involved in investigations into the supply of equipment to the Russian Federation. Some of this equipment was used, in particular, in the Russian military-industrial complex. This is stated in the report of the US Treasury Department, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

Who exactly was removed from the sanctions list

According to the published information, sanctions have been lifted from the following companies and individuals:

  • Veles International Limited (Cyprus) and its owner Dmytro Bugayenko. The company is a subsidiary of a Moscow-based investment firm. At the same time, its related legal entities in Russia remain under US sanctions. Earlier, Veles International was subject to restrictions due to its activities in the financial sector of the Russian Federation and work with wealthy Russian clients.
  • Hi-Tech Koneisto (Finland) and its top manager Evgenia Dremova. The company supplied high-tech optoelectronic and laboratory equipment to Russia.
  • 365 Days Freight Services FZCO (UAE, Dubai) and the Turkish company Etasis, which exported to Russia equipment subject to sanctions restrictions and used in the military-industrial complex.
  • CPS Proses Kontrol Urunleri Sanayi Ve Ticaret Anonim Sirketi (Turkey), which supplied German and American-made machine tools to a Russian defense contractor.

Why the US lifted the sanctions

The US side has not yet provided any official explanations for the reasons for lifting sanctions against these companies and individuals.

The U.S. Treasury Department’s announcement did not specify whether it was due to a change in the companies’ behavior, the end of violations of the sanctions regime, or other factors.

Important nuance: sanctions against Russia have not been lifted

The U.S. Treasury Department emphasizes that the easing does not mean a general easing of sanctions policy towards Russia.

Russian legal entities, defense contractors, and most of the supply chains of the Russian military-industrial complex remain subject to strict restrictions.

In addition, the removal of certain companies from the lists does not affect the existing sanctions against Russia itself, its defense industry and financial sector.
