The U.S. and Iran Have Not Reached an Agreement – Vance

U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance stated that following talks with Iran in Pakistan, the parties failed to reach an agreement. In particular, Tehran is not yet ready to abandon its nuclear program.

This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" citing CNN.

During a press conference in Islamabad, Vance said that the U.S. has been engaged in the negotiation process for 22 hours and has held a series of substantive discussions. That is the good news. But there is also bad news.

“The bad news is that we have not reached an agreement. And I think this is much worse news for Iran than for the U.S. So we are returning to the United States without having reached an agreement,” the official noted.

He added that the U.S. does not yet see Iran’s willingness to give up the capability to develop nuclear weapons, and this is a stumbling block in the negotiations.

“The question is, do we see a fundamental commitment from the Iranians not to develop nuclear weapons—not just now, not just in two years, but in the long term? We don’t see that yet, but we hope we will,” Vance said.

The vice president emphasized that Iranian officials refused to accept the terms of the agreement, which, in his words, were “quite flexible.”

“We are leaving here with a very simple proposal, a way to reach a mutual understanding, which is our final and best option. We’ll see if the Iranians accept it,” he said.

Vance also noted that U.S. President Donald Trump had told the American delegation to come to the talks with good intentions and to make every effort to reach an agreement. According to him, they did just that, but no progress was achieved.

In addition, the vice president added that he was in constant communication with Trump during the trilateral talks with Iran in Pakistan, and also stayed in touch with other administration officials.

“Obviously, we were in constant communication with the president. I don’t know how many times we spoke with him—maybe six or twelve times over the past 21 hours,” he told reporters.

It should be noted that prior to Vance’s press conference , Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Bakai outlined the topics discussed during the Iran-U.S. talks.

According to him, the main topics included: the Strait of Hormuz, the nuclear program, war reparations, the lifting of sanctions, and a complete end to the war against Iran and in the region.
