Trump’s relations with China are now “very, very good”

In a few days, relations between the United States and China have gone from a trade war to absolutely friendly. At least that’s what US President Donald Trump said, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

The day before, representatives of the United States and China held talks in Geneva, which ended in successful agreements to reduce joint customs tariffs. According to them, the US will reduce tariffs from 145% to 30%, and China – from 125% to 10%. These agreements will be in effect for 90 days.

Trump was pleased with this success and even announced a conversation with the Chinese leader.

“Our relationship is very, very good. I will probably talk to President Xi at the end of the week,”

– he told reporters.

However, many commentators on the trade war argue that the US has essentially lost it. [ k2] has previously written that Trump’s tariffs against China will primarily be reflected on the shelves of American stores. So the current agreement was needed primarily by Trump.

It is also worth noting that this agreement satisfied Beijing’s key demands, with tariffs reduced by both sides. Xi Jinping will now “sell” this at home as a victory after an unprecedented propaganda campaign that even invoked the legacy of Mao Zedong. And it’s safe to say that the Chinese side has seen how to act in relation to the current US administration.

The trade war between the United States and China

The trade confrontation between the world’s two largest economies escalated sharply in early 2025 after Trump’s re-election. on February 1, Washington imposed a 10% tariff on all Chinese imports, accusing Beijing of “unfair trade” and manipulating the yuan exchange rate. on March 4, tariffs were raised by another 10%, bringing the total level of duties to 20%.

In response, China announced the introduction of 15% duties on American agricultural products and 10% duties on other goods. This was followed by a series of announcements of new tariffs from both sides.

Ultimately, the US raised duties on Chinese imports to 145%, leaving temporary exemptions for certain technology goods at 20%. In response, China introduced mirror measures, imposing duties on American goods up to 125% and restricting exports of critical rare earth metals. The trade confrontation between the two countries was escalating.

The Chinese authorities developed a comprehensive action plan that included retaliatory tariffs, restrictions on about 60 US companies, and export restrictions on rare earth metals.

It is worth noting that this tough stance was a sharp turn in Beijing’s strategy. Previously, China had been trying to avoid an escalation of the trade war – for months, Chinese diplomats had been trying to establish a channel of communication with the Trump administration to discuss the economic relations that the Chinese cabinet has described in state media as mutually beneficial.
