The Light of Resurrection: How Easter Is Celebrated in Ukraine and What the Holiday Means

12 April 00:21

On Sunday, April 12, Eastern Orthodox Christians and Greek Catholics celebrate one of the most important Christian holidays—Easter. This holiday symbolizes the victory of life over death and of good over evil, and is a central event in the Christian faith, as it is associated with the resurrection of Jesus Christ, writes "Komersant Ukrainian".

The significance of Easter for Christians is profound. Christ’s resurrection is seen as confirmation of faith in salvation and eternal life. For many believers, it is not only a religious event but also a time of spiritual purification, reevaluation of one’s life, and reconciliation with others. Before the holiday, people traditionally observe Great Lent—a period of abstinence, prayer, and repentance that lasts seven weeks.

In Ukraine, Easter holds special significance and is rich in traditions passed down from generation to generation. One of the most famous traditions is preparing an Easter basket. It contains paska—a festive bread—eggs (pysanky and krashanky), sausage, cheese, butter, and other foods. On the night from Saturday to Sunday or early in the morning, believers go to church to have these foods blessed.

The pysanka is a distinct symbol of Ukrainian Easter. It is not just a painted egg, but a true work of art with deep symbolism. The patterns on pysankas have their own meanings: the sun, life, protection, and prosperity. The tradition of pysanka-making in Ukraine has a thousand-year history and is an important part of national culture.

Another important tradition is the Easter greeting: “Christ is risen!” — “He is risen indeed!” These words are heard throughout the holiday period and symbolize joy and unity. Families gather around the festive table, share blessed dishes, and spend time with loved ones.

In many regions of Ukraine, folk customs—such as hayivky and vesnyanky—have been preserved. These are ritual songs and games performed mainly by young people in churchyards or outdoors. They symbolize the arrival of spring, the rebirth of nature, and new life.

Thus, Easter in Ukraine is a blend of deep spirituality, family warmth, and a rich cultural heritage. This holiday brings people together, reminds us of the importance of faith, hope, and love, and preserves the unique traditions of the Ukrainian people.
