Siberia asks to invite Ukraine to NATO in the coming days – Reuters

Ukraine is asking its partners to invite it to join NATO next week. A letter from Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga was published by Reuters, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

According to the media outlet, the letter refers to Ukraine’s new efforts to receive an invitation to NATO, which is part of the “Victory Plan” unveiled last month by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, aimed at ending the war caused by Russia’s invasion in 2022.

“I urge you to endorse the decision to invite Ukraine to join the Alliance as one of the outcomes of the NATO Foreign Ministers’ meeting on December 3-4, 2024,” Reuters quoted Sibiga as saying in the document.

In contrast, NATO diplomats say that there is no consensus among the allies on inviting Ukraine at this stage. Any such decision would require the consent of all 32 member states. Earlier, the NATO Secretary General said that Ukraine would join the alliance and that it was on an “irreversible” path to membership. However, no official invitation has been sent to Ukraine and no deadline has been set.

In her letter, Sibiga argues that an invitation would be the right response “to the constant escalation of the war unleashed by Russia, the latest demonstration of which is the deployment of tens of thousands of North Korean troops and the use of Ukraine as a testing ground for new weapons.”

However, in recent days, diplomats have said that they see no change in the position of NATO countries, in particular, in anticipation of the Ukrainian policy of the United States, the dominant power in the Alliance, under the new administration of President-elect Donald Trump.
