Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrsky explained why the troops had to withdraw from Siversk, Donetsk region. The general said this in an interview with Channel 24, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
Syrsky noted that Serebryansky Forest, Bilohorivka, and Siversk are areas where heavy fighting also took place during World War II.
“The area itself consists of dominant heights, chalk mountains, like in Bilohorivka. The fortifications were built back then. They held then, and ensured such a steady defense. On the other hand, this direction was not a priority for a long time. Because the enemy simply did not have the ability to conduct offensive actions. There were gradual actions. Yes, there were brigades. They continued to advance, but the intensity of the fighting was lower than in other areas,” explained the chief.
According to Syrsky, the defense of Siversk has become problematic.
“It would have been wrong to leave the troops, those units that were defending there, to die. Therefore, a decision was made. We retreated to the dominant heights. There is room to retreat. The enemy is also trying to take advantage of this, but it is not working. We are planning appropriate actions in this direction. This is all I can say about this direction,” the general explained.
