Transport fares in Kyiv may change: authorities are preparing new calculations

7 April 17:18

The city government of the capital is considering revising public transportation fares.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko has instructed relevant departments to prepare economic calculations regarding potential fare changes, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

What exactly did the mayor instruct?

At the mayor’s request, the following departments are to prepare the relevant calculations:

  • the Department of Economy;
  • the Department of Transport Infrastructure.

They must develop an economic justification for a possible revision of public transportation fares in the capital.

Why fares may be revised

Such calculations are usually performed to assess:

  • the actual cost of transportation;
  • infrastructure maintenance costs;
  • the financial condition of transportation companies.

This refers to Kyiv’s public transit system, which includes the metro, buses, trolleybuses, and trams.

Does this mean a fare increase?

At this stage, the mayor’s directive only calls for the preparation of economic calculations, not an automatic fare increase.

After analyzing the data, city officials must decide on next steps—whether to keep fares unchanged or revise them.

As a rule, before changing fares in the capital, an economic analysis and public discussion are conducted.
