Tesla has started to wind down the production of Cybertruck electric pickups

Tesla has discontinued the production of the most affordable version of its Cybertruck electric pickup truck, the rear-wheel drive version. This happened a few months after its launch, indicating a lack of demand for the stripped-down electric car.

This is reported by Electrek, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

Cybertruck, according to many experts, was a commercial failure. Initially, Tesla announced more than a million pre-orders for the car and planned a production capacity of up to 250,000 units per year, and CEO Elon Musk even expressed confidence in the possibility of increasing this figure to 500,000. However, Tesla is currently selling the Cybertruck at a rate of about 20,000 units.

The main reason for the much lower than expected sales was that Tesla released the Cybertruck at a higher price and with worse performance than originally announced. In an attempt to rectify the situation, in April 2025, the company introduced a more affordable version of the electric pickup truck – the rear-wheel drive Cybertruck. If the all-wheel drive version of the Cybertruck AWD cost from $80,000, the Cybertruck RWD was offered at a price of $70,000.

However, this modification turned out to be even less attractive, as Tesla essentially stripped it of its most valuable features, such as active air suspension, a motorized luggage compartment lid, and even an in-body power outlet, in addition to the absence of one engine.
