US President Donald Trump said that Ukrainian refugees will not be expelled from the country until the end of the war. He said this while answering a journalist’s question, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
The journalist asked the president whether refugees from Ukraine would be allowed to stay in the United States until the end of the current Russian-Ukrainian war. Trump answered in the affirmative.
“I think so. We have a lot of people who came here from Ukraine. We’re working with them,”
– trump said.

Trump and Ukrainian refugees
Earlier this year, after Donald Trump took office on January 20, 2025, his administration decided to suspend the Uniting for Ukraine (U4U) program, which allowed about 240,000 Ukrainians to enter the United States under a humanitarian aid program and legally reside there for up to two years. At the same time, the extension of residence permits and protection from deportation for those who had already arrived was suspended, creating widespread uncertainty among Ukrainian refugees in the United States.
In March 2025, Reuters reported that Trump was considering revoking the temporary legal status of approximately 240,000 Ukrainians, which could lead to their transfer to a simplified deportation procedure. Trump himself told reporters:
“We don’t want to hurt anyone… I’m looking at it carefully, I’ll make a decision soon.”
In April, some Ukrainians received letters from the DHS informing them of the “termination of the humanitarian password” and demanding that they leave on their own, but the message was later withdrawn as a mistake, which only increased fear and uncertainty among the community.
