Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado will receive the Nobel Peace Prize. This was announced by the committee, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
It is noted that the prize was awarded to her for “her tireless work to promote the democratic rights of the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”
“Last year, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado was forced into hiding. Despite serious threats to her life, she remained in the country, and this choice inspired millions of people. When authoritarian regimes seize power, it is crucial to recognize the courageous defenders of freedom who rise up and resist. Democracy depends on people who refuse to be silent, who dare to step forward despite grave risks, and who remind us that freedom should never be taken for granted but always defended – with words, courage and determination. Democracy is a prerequisite for lasting peace. However, we live in a world where democracy is in retreat, where more and more authoritarian regimes are challenging norms and resorting to violence,” the Nobel Committee emphasized.
The Nobel Peace Prize is one of six Nobel Prizes bequeathed by Swedish industrialist and inventor Alfred Nobel.
