Trump is convinced that the end of the war in Ukraine is “in the near future”

US President Donald Trump believes that an agreement on a peaceful settlement between Ukraine and Russia will be reached “at some point.” He also expressed hope that this would happen “in the near future.”

This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to his comments to journalists published by the White House.

When asked what the current situation between Russia and Ukraine is, the American president replied:

“I think we will reach an agreement at some point, hopefully in the near future,” he said.

Trump also reminded journalists of the military losses in the war in Ukraine.

“So I don’t know if you’ve seen the numbers that were just released. 30 thousand soldiers have been killed this month. And there was this intelligence of 30 thousand. 27 a month earlier,” the American leader said.

At the same time, Trump avoided a direct answer to the question about additional sanctions against Russia, which he allegedly discussed with Senator Lindsey Graham.

“We discussed them (sanctions – ed.) all the time. I don’t think it’s very interesting to talk to him. Except when we talk about legislation. And we talk about legislation all the time. Do you think it’s an exciting relationship? It’s not. But we… we talk a lot about legislation, and we have great legislation on the way,” the US president said.

Peaceful settlement of the war in Ukraine and US participation in the process

As you know, in November, the United States proposed a so-called peace plan to end the war in Ukraine, which consisted of 28 points and was clearly pro-Russian. This option did not suit Kyiv, outraging Europe, which immediately came to the rescue to rework it.

Later, after a series of meetings, the first of which began in Geneva, the plan was reduced to 20 points. Territorial concessions to the aggressor, reduction of the size of Ukraine’s army, and a veto on joining NATO were all seemingly removed from the original version of the US peace plan.

An American delegation even traveled to Russia for talks with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin to review the peace plan and finalize it. However, the Russian Federation does not compromise and stands firm on its demands, which were voiced in the original version of the plan.

This conclusion can be drawn from the words of Kremlin officials who said after the talks with the Americans that no compromises were reached, although the parties allegedly told the media about productive negotiations.

The last important meeting on a peaceful settlement was President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s trip to Florida on December 28, where he met with Trump. However, despite all the developments and supposedly one hundred percent security guarantees for Ukraine, the most important and controversial issue of territories has not yet been resolved-although the White House chief says that a solution is close.

Zelenskyy, in turn, said that the peace plan is now 90% complete, and that security guarantees for Ukraine are 100% complete.

After working on the peace plan in Europe in early January, the Europeans and the Ukrainian delegation are expected to meet again in the United States.
