Trump explains why Putin doesn’t want to meet with Zelensky

26 August 00:51

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin refuses to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy because he “just doesn’t like him.” This was stated by US President Donald Trump during a conversation with journalists, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

“Because he (Zelensky – ed.) doesn’t like him (Putin – ed.). He doesn’t like him. I also have people I don’t like, and I don’t want to meet them,” Trump said.

He also added that Zelenskyy has no sympathy for Putin either.

Where can the meeting take place?

After the Washington summit, Trump proposed holding bilateral talks between Zelenskyy and Putin. According to media reports, the Kremlin insisted on Moscow, but the Ukrainian president refused. The White House even considered Budapest, but there is no official confirmation of such a proposal.

Zelenskyy himself emphasized that the meeting is only possible on neutral territory in Europe, such as Switzerland or Austria. In addition, he allows for the option of Turkey as a platform for negotiations.

The Kremlin’s position

The Russian Foreign Ministry has stated that Putin is ready for talks only if the agenda is carefully prepared. Moscow insists that without prior agreement on key issues, the meeting will not take place soon.

At the same time, Zelenskyy is convinced that the Kremlin is deliberately delaying the process to avoid a direct dialogue.

What does Trump say?

The US President emphasized that he has a plan of action if Putin continues to refuse to meet:

“I will know what to do if Putin does not agree to sit down with Zelenskyy,” Trump emphasized.
