Trump speaks out against new sanctions on Russia

20 May 2025 11:54

The imposition of additional US sanctions against Russia could harm the peaceful settlement between Ukraine and Russia, which is why the United States has not yet taken such a step. This was stated by US President Donald Trump after his conversation with Putin, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports citing Radio Liberty.

“I think there is a chance to do something. And if you do it (impose sanctions – ed.), it can make the situation much worse. But there may come a time when this will happen,”

– the American leader said.

Trump also expressed his belief that Putin wants to end the military conflict, adding:

“I think he’s had enough.”

The US president emphasized that otherwise he would not have entered into a dialog with the Russian leader. Therefore, there is no need to impose additional sanctions on him now.

Regarding Ukraine’s position, Trump refrained from making any final assessment of its efforts to end the fighting.

“I’d rather answer you in about two weeks, because I can’t say yes or no… I think Zelensky is a strong guy, he’s not easy to deal with. But I think he wants to stop… But I could better answer that question in two or four weeks,”

– the US president said.

How did Trump’s conversation with Putin go: feedback from the parties

As reported by , after a phone conversation with Putin , Trump said that Ukraine and Russia intend to start negotiations to end the war.

According to him, the parties agreed to start a dialogue on a ceasefire and conflict resolution, and he noted that he

“has details that no one else knows.”

Trump added that the two-hour conversation with Putin was held in “great tone and spirit.” He also noted that Russia, in his opinion, is interested in future trade cooperation with the United States after the war, which will create economic opportunities for both countries.

Putin, for his part, called the conversation with Trump “meaningful, frank and generally useful.” According to him, Moscow is ready to work with Ukraine on a potential memorandum on a peaceful settlement if compromises are reached that suit both sides.

After the conversation, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reiterated the importance of achieving peace and called for increased sanctions pressure on Russia if it does not support the ceasefire. According to him, he addressed Trump with a request:

“I really asked him (Trump – ed.) to think about it and apply it if Russia does not support the ceasefire and does not want to end this war.”

Another key point was the issue of Ukraine’s participation in any decisions regarding its future. Zelenskyy emphasized that it was important for Ukraine that no decisions were made without its participation

“I asked him before his conversation with Putin not to make decisions about Ukraine without us. These are fundamental things for us and very important,”
