Russia’s economy is in a poor state due to the war in Ukraine, US President Donald Trump told reporters after meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports citing CNN.
“They’re doing very badly, given that they’ve put absolutely everything on the line. Their economy is going to hell,” he said.
The White House chief made a similar statement at a press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York on September 23. In his opinion, the Russian economy is “in a terrible state and it is collapsing.”
At his meeting with Erdogan, Trump once again criticized Russia’s actions in Ukraine and called on Moscow to “stop.”
“Russia has spent millions and millions of dollars on bombs, missiles, ammunition, and [human] lives <...> and has made almost no territorial gains. I think it’s time to stop. I really do [think so],” the White House chief said.
Trump expressed confidence that the Turkish leader is able to influence the end of the conflict in Ukraine.
“[Erdogan] could have a big impact if he wanted to. He’s very neutral right now. He likes to be neutral,” he said.
Trump called on Ankara to stop buying Russian oil, as it has “many options.”
unlike Hungary and Slovakia, which are landlocked.
“If I wanted [Ankara] to stop, it would do it <...> You know why? Because you can buy it [oil] from a lot of other people,” Trump said.
