“We have to live in the real world”: Vance says weapons and sanctions won’t help Ukraine defeat Russia

Any criticism of the peace agreement that the United States administration is working on is either a misunderstanding of the agreement or a “misinterpretation of some critical realities on the ground.”

This was stated by U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance on the social network X, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

According to him, any peace plan designed to end the war in Ukraine should contain three key points.

  • stop the killings while preserving Ukraine’s sovereignty;
  • be acceptable to both Russia and Ukraine;
  • maximize the chances that the war will not resume.

Vance emphasized that he does not believe that giving more weapons and money will lead to victory. He is probably referring to aid to Ukraine.

“There is a fantasy that if we just give more money, more weapons or impose more sanctions, victory will be close. Peace will not be achieved by failed diplomats or politicians who live in a world of illusions. It can be achieved by smart people who live in the real world,” the US Vice President summarized.

The US peace plan

Recently, it became known that the United States has developed a new “peace plan” to end the war in Ukraine. It consists of 28 points, and Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff was responsible for its development with the support of Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev.

According to the document, Ukraine is required to withdraw from Donbas, reduce the size of the Armed Forces, give up long-range weapons, and more. In exchange for this, according to Axios, the country will be provided with NATO-like security guarantees.
