On Monday, February 9, it became known that the crew of a Ukrainian Mi-24 helicopter had been killed while performing a combat mission. The tragedy was reported by the 11th separate army aviation brigade “Kherson,” according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
The brigade noted that their comrades, officers who heroically defended Ukraine in the sky, did not return from the combat mission.
“It is with great sadness that we report an irreparable loss. Our brothers-in-arms, the crew of the Mi-24 helicopter, did not return from their combat mission. Only the best sons of Ukraine are capable of defending their homeland so heroically and fighting desperately in the skies against the occupiers,” the brigade said in a statement.
What is known about the death of the Mi-24 crew
The 11th Separate Army Aviation Brigade emphasized that the deceased were true patriots, worthy people, and officers with a capital O. The military expressed their deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the fallen defenders.
“This loss is a great pain. For us, they will remain in the sky forever. We express our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the fallen heroes. They loved the sky and Ukraine. Eternal flight! Honor!” the brigade added.
No other details about the circumstances of the tragedy have been reported at this time.
The Mi-24 is a Soviet attack and transport helicopter used to support infantry, known by its unofficial name “Crocodile.” It is capable of performing combat and transport tasks simultaneously.
As of 2024, there were about 45 such helicopters in Ukraine.
Earlier, in December, the 12th separate army aviation brigade also reported the death of the Mi-24 crew while performing a combat mission.
On February 2, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in an interview with France 2 and Le Monde that more than 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed on the battlefield since the start of Russia’s full-scale aggression.
At the same time, a significant number of people remain on the lists of missing persons, which makes it difficult to establish the final figures.
