Production of electric locomotives for Ukraine has begun at the Alstom plant in Belfort, France. This was reported by Ukrzaliznytsia, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

Alstom Transport specialists monitored and conducted a competitive selection of Ukrainian suppliers who can participate in the localization of electric locomotive production,” the statement said.

Radio stations, locomotive safety and fire alarm systems, brake system components, couplers, cab heaters, seats, and sanding system parts will be manufactured in Ukraine.

It is noted that separate negotiations regarding wheel production are ongoing.

“Production of new electric locomotives for Ukrzaliznytsia has begun: the bodies of the first electric locomotive have already been manufactured. It will arrive in Ukraine in early 2027 to undergo certification and endurance testing,” the statement reads.

Delivery of the entire batch of 55 locomotives is scheduled to be completed by May 2029.

“This is the first such large-scale purchase of electric locomotives in the history of Ukrzaliznytsia, and it is important that Ukrainian manufacturers will also participate in their creation,” Ukrzaliznytsia added.

As a reminder:

Ukrzaliznytsia signed the contract with Alstom Transport following the results of an international tender organized by the World Bank.

In terms of specifications, the new electric locomotives are significantly better than the existing ones: maximum power up to 9,000 kW, speed up to 120 km/h.
