5G launched in Kharkiv: what is known

14 February 20:10

Testing of 5G technology has begun in Kharkiv. This is the third city in Ukraine where new-generation communication base stations are in operation.

This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the press service of the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine and the mobile operator Kyivstar.

“We have launched 5G in Kharkiv. We are turning on the future where the enemy is trying to stop life. On the initiative of the president, we are scaling up the 5G pilot to Kharkiv, already the third city in Ukraine, just 30 km from the border,” the statement said.

The first to test the new generation connection on Valentine’s Day were newlyweds Vladislav and Kateryna, who said “Yes!” in “Dii” at 5G speed.

As noted by Kyivstar, starting today, high-speed mobile internet is available on Freedom Square.

“During the testing period in Lviv and Borodianka, we processed over 89.2 TB of 5G traffic. In Lviv, over 186,000 of our subscribers used the 5G pilot, and in Borodianka, about 9,000,” the company said.

How to connect to 5G

To test the advantages of the technology, you need:

  • have a smartphone that supports 5G;
  • be in the coverage area;
  • install the latest version of the software.

It should be noted that the availability of a 5G signal may also depend on location and building density. Access to the new generation network may also be limited indoors.

Launch of 5G in Ukraine

Back in May 2023, former Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov announced the start of 5G testing in Ukraine. Initially, the new generation of communications was only available in select locations in several cities.

On January 12 this year, a 5G pilot was launched in the center of Lviv, and on January 28, in Borodianka, Kyiv region.

In addition, at the end of July 2025, Fedorov said that the fifth-generation network would be available in one of the higher education institutions. In particular, the project was launched in cooperation with Vodafone on the basis of KAI (National Aviation University).

Earlier, Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation Stanislav Prybyitko said that the full launch of the technology had been postponed until the end of martial law. At the same time, he noted that testing was already planned in three cities: Lviv, Kharkiv, and Borodianka.

According to Prybytsky, almost 22% of all phones in Ukraine support this technology. He said that it will be possible to cover most of the country with 5G connectivity by 2030.
