Commandant’s offices to be set up in Kursk region, – Zelensky (video)

If necessary, Ukraine will establish military commandant’s offices in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation, where Ukrainian troops are currently stationed. This was was stated by president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a meeting held on Wednesday, 14 August, reports [Kommersant].
Zelensky held the meeting with the head of the Ministry of Defence and Security, Iryna Vereshchuk, the head of the Presidential Office, Andriy Yermak, and the Human Rights Commissioner, Dmytro Lubinets.
“We discussed key issues. Security, humanitarian aid, the establishment of military commandant’s offices, if necessary,” the head of state said.
Zelenskyy clarified that Ukraine is defending itself and the lives of its people in the border communities and is taking active action on Russian territory. “But the Ukrainian military conducting this operation strictly adhere to the requirements of international conventions and international humanitarian law.
Earlier, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine stated that Ukraine was not interested in taking back territory in the Kursk region from Russia. Raids on Russian territory will stop when the Kremlin agrees to restore a just peace.
Already, the Ukrainian military has formed a buffer zone in the Kursk region near the border. Ukraine plans to open humanitarian corridors there to evacuate civilians, allow representatives of the UN and the Red Cross to enter, and establish food and medical supplies.
Within the zone, it is planned to
- conduct humanitarian operations to support civilians within the zone;
- open humanitarian corridors for the evacuation of civilians, both towards Russia and Ukraine;
- allow international humanitarian organisations to enter the zone for the purpose of humanitarian response and monitoring of the humanitarian situation.
