The speed limit in Kyiv will not be raised to 80 km/h: what the city authorities have decided
31 March 16:04
From April 1 to November 1, a standard speed limit of 50 km/h will be in effect on all roads in the capital.
This decision was made by the Kyiv City State Administration following an analysis of the condition of the city’s road network, reports "Komersant Ukrainian".
Previously, during the warmer months, the speed limit on certain highways was raised to 80 km/h, but this year they decided to abandon this practice.
Why the speed limit increase was abandoned
The Kyiv City State Administration reported that the decision was made following a comprehensive survey of the street and road network.
Several factors were taken into account during the analysis:
- the presence of public transit lanes;
- left turns on major roads;
- sections with limited visibility;
- traffic accident statistics from the previous year.
Planned repairs also played a role
Another factor was the repair work planned for a number of roads in the capital.
Due to these works, temporary traffic control schemes may be in effect on many sections, making it difficult to increase speed limits.
How the speed limit worked previously
In previous years, during the warmer months, speeds of up to 80 km/h were permitted on certain highways in Kyiv.
Specifically, speed limits were adjusted on the following sections:
- Naberezhne Highway — from Poshtova Square to Naddniprianske Highway;
- Roman Shukhevych Avenue — from the North Bridge to Honoré de Balzac Street;
- Stepan Bandera Avenue — from Yordanska Street to the North Bridge;
- Naberezhno-Rybalska Street — from Elektrikiv Street to the Havana Bridge.
What this means for drivers
In 2026, drivers in the capital will have to adhere to a general speed limit of 50 km/h on all city roads.
The decision may affect travel speeds in the city, but at the same time, authorities expect it to reduce the risk of traffic accidents and improve road safety.
