Acute intestinal infection breaks out in Kyiv: students suffer

An outbreak of acute intestinal infection has been reported in a school in Kyiv. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the Kyiv City Centre for Disease Control and Disease Prevention.

It is known that the outbreak of intestinal infection was registered on 6 September.

“All patients were bacteriologically examined for intestinal infections. Some of them are being treated in medical institutions of the city, others are undergoing outpatient treatment under the supervision of a family doctor,” the department informed.

The Kyiv City CDC of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine has informed the Main Department of the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection in Kyiv and the Department of Health of the executive body of the Kyiv City Council (KCSA) about the cases. Authorised officials have now launched an epidemiological investigation.

What is known about acute intestinal infections

Acute intestinal infections are one of the most common infectious diseases that can lead to serious complications, especially in children. They are usually caused by bacteria or viruses that enter the human body through contaminated food or contaminated water, or by poor hand hygiene.

Symptoms of acute intestinal infections include

  • weakness
  • fever;
  • abdominal pain;
  • vomiting and diarrhoea.

Prevention of acute intestinal infections

Maintaining cleanliness

  • wash your hands before picking up food or preparing food;
  • wash your hands after going to the toilet;
  • wash and disinfect all surfaces and kitchen utensils used for food preparation;
  • protect the kitchen and food from insects, rodents and other animals.

Separating raw food from cooked food

  • separate raw meat and seafood from other foods;
  • use separate utensils for handling raw foods, such as knives and chopping boards;
  • store food in a sealed container to avoid contact between raw and cooked foods.

Cook food thoroughly

  • cook or boil foods thoroughly, especially meat, eggs and seafood;
  • bring food to a boil so that it is cooked at a minimum of 70 °C;
  • the juice of meat or poultry should be clear, not pink when cooked;
  • reheat cooked food thoroughly.

Store food at a safe temperature

  • do not leave cooked food at room temperature for more than 2 hours;
  • keep cooked food hot (60 °C) until serving;
  • do not store food for too long, even in the refrigerator;
  • do not defrost food at room temperature.

Use safe water and fresh food

  • use pure or purified water;
  • choose fresh and unspoilt foods;
  • wash fruit and vegetables thoroughly, especially if you are going to eat them raw;
  • do not eat food that has expired.
