China shows weapons for massive power outages

China’s state television has shown an animated video about a new type of weapon that can disable power plants and lead to a “complete blackout” in a certain area.

This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the South China Morning Post.

The story cites data from the state-owned China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, a contractor of the country’s Defense Ministry.

The footage shows how the missile is launched from a ground-based installation, 90 cylindrical submunitions fall out of it, which explode upon impact with the surface. As a result, thin carbon filaments designed to short-circuit high-voltage power systems are released into the air.

It is reported that one such projectile can cause large-scale power outages over an area of at least 10,000 square meters.

Neither the name of the weapon nor details about the stage of its production were disclosed.

The publication suggested that it was a new type of graphite bomb. Such a weapon was used by the United States against Iraq in 1991, when the country lost 85% of its electricity. These bombs were also used in Serbia in 1999, when 70% of the country’s territory was left without electricity.

The very idea of disabling the enemy’s power grid during hostilities is decades old. During the Second World War, the British used the technology of descending balloons with steel cables suspended from them in Germany to short-circuit power lines.
