Information about the “Reserve” app is being actively disseminated online, including allegations that it allegedly collects users’ geolocation and digital data. The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine officially denies these claims and urges citizens to check information only through official sources, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
What happened
Earlier, a number of Telegram publics with signs of Russian IPSO spread information that “Reserve” allegedly actively tracks user geolocation, has access to Wi-Fi, GPS and other data.
According to the Ministry of Defense experts, the goal of such information attacks is to sow distrust in digitalization, disrupt communication between the state and citizens, and create obstacles to the mobilization process.
The Ministry of Defense has made this clear:
- The Reserve does not track the geolocation of users. The only access the app has is through the camera (for scanning QR codes) and notifications. There are no GPS trackers or hidden data collection tools in the app. Each user can check this for themselves in the settings.
- None of the screenshots published on the web shows evidence that this is exactly the case with Reserve. The above Java code snippet is not related to this application and is typical, it can be used in any other products. In addition, the Backup does not use any modules from InMobi that are mentioned in the publications.
- Reserve works exclusively with the information that the user submits via BankID, as well as with certain data from the Oberig register. All processes are transparent, and the system has passed the necessary checks in accordance with the requirements of the current legislation in the field of technical information protection and information security standards.
The Ministry of Defense calls on citizens not to succumb to provocations, not to disseminate unverified information and to be guided by the position of government agencies.
What is “Reserve”?
The Reserve app was created as a tool for effective digital interaction between the state and citizens subject to mobilization measures. It allows you to:
- receive personalized notifications;
- interact with military enlistment offices via smartphone;
- submit information via BankID without physical presence.
