NATO is not discussing the issue of sending military contingents to Ukraine to guarantee security.
This was stated in an interview with the Corriere della Sera newspaper by the chairman of the NATO Military Committee, Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
He noted that this is a political issue in the negotiations with Russia. According to Dragone, the topic, which has been raised by some countries that support Ukraine, remains in its “infancy.”
The military commander added that security guarantees determined by European politicians should be put into context.
“For example, who decides on the ground whether the Russian or Ukrainian side has violated the agreements? … What territory should be monitored? Should the military only observe and/or protect, and if so, with what weapons? None of this has been determined,” said Dragoni.
According to him, all questions are open. He emphasized that NATO is primarily concerned with protecting the citizens of its member states. He also reiterated the organization’s full commitment to supporting Ukraine.
As Euractiv wrote, after talks with U.S. President Donald Trump, European leaders are moving toward creating a framework of security guarantees for Kyiv.
