In the Netherlands, fraudsters prey on refugees’ money: how to protect yourself

Cyber fraudsters have become more active in the Netherlands, withdrawing money from the accounts of Ukrainian refugees. They do this with the help of fake messages sent to people on behalf of the IND migration service, reports "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Studiegids.tue.nl.
Cybercriminals send messages on WhatsApp or SMS to Ukrainian numbers and offer them “additional financial assistance”. But for this, you need to provide your personal data. It is with their help that criminals gain access to people’s bank accounts and withdraw funds from them.
IND has already warned Ukrainians that
- they never send messages via SMS or WhatsApp;
- communicate with refugees only through letters;
- do not offer financial support.
The Migration Service advises Ukrainians in the Netherlands to be vigilant and not to respond to suspicious messages. If people do become victims of criminals and lose their money from bank accounts, they are advised to contact the police.
